Logistics feasibility study for an automated warehouse
At the time of the study:
For its warehouse in Bornem (B), Alcon wants to investigate which conceptual and process changes could be of interest from an economical point of view. Additional attention is required for the logistics impact induced by the company's expected growth and the introduction of the European Medical Devices Regulation.
Objectives
Engineer an optimal logistics concept and investigate the related feasibility taking into account following elements:
- extension of storage capacity according to growth projection and changes in SKU base;
- improvement of receiving and putaway process;
- improvement picking strategy;
- improvement consolidation process (VAS and non-VAS flows).
Result
A concept design based on a goods-to-person solution driven by miniload stacker cranes and an alternative design based on an Autostore solution. Both concepts were elaborated and demonstrated a strong business case. At the same time, the designed solutions showed a significant increase in maximal throughput introducting new opportunities for a.o. cut-off scheme and service levels.
